Modpack RAM sizing without guesswork
A practical framework for sizing JVM heap and Nexelya VPS RAM for modded Minecraft servers.
Oversized hosts waste money; undersized hosts waste weekends. Use player count, mod count, and chunk-loader usage—not marketing “unlimited RAM.”
Quick reference
| Workload | Players | Suggested Nexelya start |
|---|---|---|
| Light mods | under 15 | 8–16GB VPS |
| Medium modpack | 15–30 | 16–24GB VPS |
| Heavy / FTB-style | 30–50 | 32GB VPS |
| Heavy + high concurrency | 50+ | Dedicated |
JVM vs system RAM
Leave 2–4GB for Linux, backups, and monitoring beyond your -Xmx value. If heap is 24GB, order 28–32GB VPS minimum.
