Migrating modded Minecraft from VPS to dedicated

Cutover checklist for moving a modded Minecraft world from Nexelya VPS to dedicated bare metal with minimal downtime.

Published May 15, 2026

Prepare the dedicated target

Provision dedicated with equal or higher RAM than your peak JVM allocation. Install the same Java version and mod loader. Test modpack boot on the new host before DNS or IP cutover.

  • Snapshot the VPS world and mod folders after a clean shutdown.
  • Record server.properties, whitelist, and ops list.
  • Schedule maintenance in Discord with a rollback plan.

Move data

Use rsync or scp between instances on the same Nexelya account for fast LAN-style transfers when possible. Verify checksums on world region files before starting the dedicated JVM.

Cutover and rollback

Point players to the new IP, keep the VPS offline but intact for 48 hours as rollback. Monitor TPS and RAM on dedicated; adjust JVM flags if needed. Add Managed Ops backups on the new service before the next modpack update.
